Al Vickers is the Chief Operating Officer of Grid United where he is accountable for Grid United’s development of multiple long distance interregional transmission projects in North America.
Al has over 25 years of energy industry experience and was most recently the CEO of bp’s US renewables business, in which he led development and operation of a large utility scale renewables portfolio. Prior to this, Al held a wide range of executive leadership positions in the oil and gas industry as Senior Vice President Global Upstream Operations and Senior Vice President, Drilling. Al was also the Vice President of Safety and Operational Risk for bp’s global drilling organization in the aftermath of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon incident and he played a leading role in bp’s recovery from this tragic event. Al has held board positions in energy businesses around the world, including bp Bunge in Brazil, the world’s second largest biofuels company. These experiences have allowed Al the joy of leading businesses across 5 continents.
Al is passionate about the energy industry and has provided leadership to a range of industry efforts, most recently as a Board and Executive Committee member of American Clean Power. Al has also been an active member of the Houston community for many years as a board member of Asia Society, an advisory board member at Greentown labs and the executive sponsor of the Texas MS150 charity bike ride. Al’s contributions to the Houston community were recognized when he and his wife Starlee were jointly named Houston’s International Citizens of the Year by the mayor of Houston in 2021.
Al has a passion for people and the development of diverse talent and was named Executive of the Year by the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers in 2022 in recognition of his efforts in developing diverse talent across the energy industry.
Al holds a master’s degree in chemical engineering from Manchester University in the UK, is a Professional Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers. Al lives in Houston with his wife Starlee, and their three sons, Jack, Cade and Ethan. He enjoys running, outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and skiing and travelling. He is a very enthusiastic but profoundly average chef.
